The latest “Dangerous by Design” pedestrian accident report released by Transportation of America has pointed its finger at Florida again! The group ranks states according to how dangerous they are for pedestrians. Their findings? The worst cities in the country were all in the sunshine state: Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville and Miami.

This is not new news! We read about fatal pedestrian accidents, someone being hit by a car in a crosswalk, or a tragic hit and run crash involving a bicyclist every week in our papers.

Laws have been passed to make cars safer and to reduce to the number of accidents caused by drunk driving. And it seems Florida is slowly moving toward a penalty for texting while driving but what have we done to improve pedestrian safety? From 2000 to 2009, 47,000 people in the U.S. died in fatal pedestrian crashes.

How many lives will we need to lose and serious injuries suffered by someone trying to cross a road before we commit public resources to improving the safety of our country and states’ vulnerable road users?
